I agree it is counter-intuitive, and maybe there is no causal relationship between the two, but I tend to think there is, or at least a correlation between the two. It is surely true that when I ran the bike with the petcock in "run," the spark plug would become carbon fouled. However, if while riding with the fouled plug, I put the petcock in "prime," it would soon run fine and the spark plug was the perfect color.
